What happens when you need a large portion of your tooth to be filled or replaced? Whether your tooth has suffered damage and chipped or undergone a large amount of decay a dental crown can be used to offer long lasting protection.
A crown is an artificial tooth covering that will be cemented over the top of your tooth down to your gum line. Such a method is used to help restore the natural strength of your tooth while maintaining a natural look and appearance to your tooth.
There are a number of reasons why your dentist might recommend a dental crown for your tooth or teeth. When a significant portion of your tooth needs to be filled, whether from a large cavity or fracture, a crown will offer better protection to the remaining tooth.
If you have suffered a dental injury that has left you with a chipped tooth, a crown can be utilized to help return strength to the tooth and leave it with a more natural look. If the tooth’s root has been exposed due to the break, the crown will offer further protection by protecting the nerves.
What happens when I need to get a dental crown?
Fear not, although the thought of getting a dental crown might be worrying you can be assured that our staff will help to make the process as simple and pain free as possible.
Preparing the tooth for a crown is painless. There may be temperature sensitivity after the local anesthetic (freezing) wears off – from not at all to up to a few days but this will subside with no other side effects.
Before your permanent crown is cemented onto your tooth you will be fitted with a temporary crown. A temporary crown is made chairside and will be replaced with a permanent crown once the lab has completed making it – approximately 1-2 weeks later. This will ensure that your crown is a natural and comfortable fit. Permanent crowns can be made from a variety of materials, including zirconia (a white metal that is most common), porcelain, ceramic or gold. Your dentist will go over the options with you and choose the material that best suits your needs.
Crowns are long lasting if properly cared for and once they are in place will last you 10-20 years – sometimes longer! Proper care includes thorough brushing, including flossing around the crown, and making sure that you keep up with your regular dental check ups.
